"What is one innovation you have witnessed developing from childhood?"
One innovation which has become more and more technologically advanced over the years is the mobile phone. On April 3, 1973, the first working prototype of the handheld mobile phone, the Motorola Dyna-Tac, was demonstrated. This huge mobile phone by today's standards weighed about 2.5 pounds (roughly 1.1kg), had no display, had only 35 minutes of talk time and could only talk, listen and dial. When it was introduced into the consumer market in 1983 by Motorola, one phone cost around $3,500. In childhood, I remember my parents' phones smaller than that in 1973, but still large according to today's standards (unable to fit into the pocket).
But now look at the mobile phone today. Smartphones are all too common in our world today, and our phones are getting more and more sophisticated and capable, taking photos rivaling those taken by cameras, giving us ready access to the Internet, as well as providing us with so many functions that have made our lives more convenient. This is all due to continual innovation by the many scientists and engineers over the years.
